This is a picture of Japanese woman, Junko Sakai, age 37. This picture was accompanied by a report from The Washington Post published in 2004. Junko Sakai lives as a happily single woman in modern day Japan and is advocating for other ladies to do the same.
Both this picture and article provide a clear example of how life for Japanese women has evolved. Many women living in Japan have lost their traditional views on their lives and now live their lives independently. Unlike in both the Meiji Restoration and the Edo Period, women living in Modern day Japan are not reliant on the men in their family for security, for socially and finically.
Junko Sakai is an excellent example of the change for woman in Japan. Her independence and freedom that she has allowed herself to have contradicts the lives of Japanese woman of the past

This source shows how the women of Japan have changed dramatically in their beliefs and what they think is right. This online news report shows the stats of how Japanese women are changing from family oriented people - to career hungry, independent women. This website reports on how women are changing and not wanting to get married or to have children. This source links to to research topic as we are trying to show the differences and changes of the roles of women from the Meiji to Modern Period. This article reports on how the lives of Japanese are being altered - and how the government are more and more understanding of the women’s wishes. It also states how the government treat women more like equals - giving these women a voice in society. This source is significant as it states how women in the modern day are moving away from their culture, normal routines and family traditions in the past. It tells the story of three women moving forward to the future, telling the reporters what women now want, and how they are starting to think like everyone else - westernized beliefs. This is a useful source as it provided statistics and information of how the majority of the Japanese women population think and believe. It shows how women have changed from their obedient traditional ways in the Meiji period, to more westernized and sophisticated individuals. The purpose of this source is to give readers of the newspaper in Japan a message - a message to let males and other women in Japan know that women are stepping up and trying their best to fit in and be as equal as men - they are striving to empower themselves. This article is to show and persuade other women to really think about their beliefs - and to try and be the best they can be. To try to change the ‘traditional Japanese women image,’ for future generations.

Book that portrays Japanese Women in Modern Day.
TITLE: The New Japanese Women: Modernity, Media and Women in Interwar Japan.
AUTHOR: Barbara Sato.
PUBLICIST: Duke University Press, 16/04/2003.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT? This book is basically the author describing and explaining the bloom of the ‘New Woman’ who emerged in the Japanese culture between the World Wars. She shows how the images of modern women burst into Japanese life in different era’s of Japan’s history. The author analyses and describes how the modern girl - both housewife and professional working woman came into play during these different eras in Japan society.
This source shows how Japanese women in the past have changed in the Modern period. The woman in this picture is up close, and the children and husband are in the background to show that in modern day, women have more power or just as much power as their children and their husbands than in the past. This image links to my research topic as it shows how women have changed from the the Meiji restoration to modern day society. It shows the new Japanese woman, the independent one with rights and family that she chooses to have. That is what I am researching about. This book source also has information on how the change from the Meiji to modern in women. This source is significant as it shows the change in women’s beliefs and values. This book is all about how Japanese women have changed in many different ways after the war, and how laws have changed providing them more rights, which has changed Japanese society in many ways. This source provides information not only on the front cover, but inside the book that states how women have gained equal rights and have changed in their traditions and culture in the 21st century. This source has been very useful as it provides information from the book to state the changes in women in Japan and their their rights. That is what we needed to know, so it really was a helpful source. The purpose of this source is to inform and educate the people of Japan as well as other cultures on how women have made a stand, and have fought for equal rights, and have finally gotten through to the government that they are just not objects in Japanese society, they are people.

Primary Source
A shinto Priest, three women and a child, Edo Period c.1799
The Artist - Katsushika Hokusai
Publisher - Bridgeman Art Library, USA Smithsonian Institution.
The original piece is displayed at the Art Institute.
The source shows a movement painting of a traditional and religious activity performed by a shinto priest for 3 women and one child. The painting provides a visual insight into the religious and traditional aspects of the women and what it involved. The painting also delegates the clothing and how the women were presented by the choice clothing during the Edo period. This is shown by the material layers, colours, hair and make-up.
The painting links to the research topic as it provides a visual insight into the women during the Edo period, by observing the physical detail and how religion and traditional was a big aspect and part of the women.
The painting is significant because it is an original visual source of the Edo period in Japan. The significance is a detailed look into what Japan was like and focus point being the women and priest in the painting. This significance rather than it being document information, but an exquisite admirable painting of Japanese history and society.
The source is useful, but is very limited on what it provides a viewer with. The painting is a simple interpretation captured during a religious moment in the Edo period, but does not provide a real insight into what the women stood for and what my subjects question is try to detect.
The purpose of the source to demonstrate a visual interpretation of women during the Edo period, by their physical appearance and the religion and traditional aspects of their lives. The painting’s main purpose is to provide an insight into the look and behaviour of the women by a visual image that can be dictated in various ways as to what is happening and what the meaning of the painting is.
